I had thought Alex and I were happily married. Our tenth wedding anniversary was coming up, too. It had been the reason why I hadn’t seen it coming.
I was too much in my bubble of happiness, but when the news came, that bubble shattered and brought me to the harsh reality.
Not only did he cheat on me with my childhood best friend Bethany, but he also had gotten her pregnant.
My world had started to crumble; however, that was until the truth came to light with the DNA results as I would find to have the last laugh.
Fairytale Lovestory
You know, I had always thought my marriage was perfect. We were childhood friends that turned into something more. It almost was something out of a fairytale.
He was the handsome jock, and I was the valedictorian of our year. Our parents had always supported our relationship, but I bet mine wouldn’t if they knew how it would pan out and how blind I would become.
Married out of High School
We married right out of high school, and though he offered, or rather pressured, for me to stay home and start a family with him, I was adamant about getting a degree.
I wanted children with him, a family, but I also knew that it wasn’t in my nature to stay home.
He joined me, playing sports near where I studied, and it was perfect, or so I thought

I had been so blind. Stupid, blind, and naive not to have seen it. Bethany had joined me in college, and the three of us had gotten an apartment together.
It had been cheaper, and we all knew each other, but apparently, it had started there. I had just liked the fact that the two most important people in my life got along and hadn’t looked into it.
Alex, Beth, and I had become the three musketeers, the ABC, Alexander, Bethany, and Clara. Though I was the only one who got a degree out of the experience, it didn’t lessen the love we all held for each other, though theirs was a bit stronger than I would have liked now, come to think of it.
However, their betrayal would serve them the ultimate karma.
Blindsided by the Affair
Their affair had completely blindsided me, though it had been going on for longer than I could have anticipated. I remember it like yesterday, too.
After an eight-hour shift, I was just making dinner for the two of us when he came into the kitchen with Beth trailing behind him.
Though confused at her arrival, I had immediately offered her a seat at the dinner table, not yet a clue about what was about to happen.
“I want a divorce,” he had said, making me stop in my tracks as I turned around, my eyes immediately going towards their interlocked hands on top of the table.
I remember them nearly bulging out of my sockets as things slowly clicked. Beth’s hand then went to her stomach.
As she looked at Alex, I knew it was over.
“I’m sorry, Clara,” Beth said with no remorse in her voice, “but we’re pregnant,” she finished smiling at me. A part of me wanted to scream, and a part of me wanted to cry, but instead, I did nothing.
I simply remained frozen in my spot, not comprehending what was happening. It took everything inside of me to say in a broken whisper, “What do you mean…”
My World Falling Apart
“Clara, you and me, it simply isn’t working. We have been trying for almost ten years, we don’t have a family, there is hardly any love left, and with Bethany I will have both.
I’m sorry,” Alex said, and pain washed over me. The two people I trusted most in this world had betrayed me in the worst way possible.
However, neither had any clue what was coming for them.
Karma Was Coming for Them
Though I am getting ahead of myself, as God’s karma wasn’t the only heavy hitter in this little revenge story, no, the way they hurt me, I would never have let them go unscathed… They deserved to feel whatever they had made me feel when they hit me with that atomic bomb that they called news.
It was heartless and ruthless, and they deserved nothing less in return.
Alex had been Jealous
You see, Alex had always been jealous of me. Ever since I got my master's degree and his sports career had failed to take flight, he simply couldn’t stand it.
The icing on the cake had been our job opportunities. We had decided to move back to our hometown as we finally wanted to start having children, but that had been our first mistake.
I Got My Dream Job
He hadn’t gotten as lucky as me. I had gotten on the job market armed with a master’s degree and had almost instantly gotten the job I wanted.
While he wasn’t eligible and was stuck doing jobs he hated. It was where the first piece of discontent was sown.
I hadn’t seen it, too taken up by my life, but with him lay now resentment toward me. Maybe that was why he had chosen Beth over me, especially after all our failed attempts to have children.
My life had turned into some soap opera nobody would believe. Divorce and betrayal? It was like a bad joke.
Alex’s cold words echoed in my mind and Beth? She looked way too pleased with herself. I never thought I’d be that person, the one whose life got flipped upside down by cheating.
But there I was, trying to figure out how to glue back the pieces of my shattered heart.
