Gay footballer Josh Cavallo gets engaged to partner Leighton Morrell; post wins hearts across the globe

Australian soccer player Josh Cavallo got engaged to his partner Leighton Morrell after a proposal at Adelaide’s Coopers Stadium. “It seemed fitting to commemorate this significant moment on the field” at Coopers Stadium “where it all began”, 24-year-old Cavallo said in a social media post.

When he publicly came out in 2021, Cavallo became the first openly gay male player in professional soccer worldwide.

According to BBC Sport, expressing gratitude towards Adelaide United for their support, Cavallo acknowledged the A-League club’s role after his engagement to Morrell. He credited the club for providing “a supportive environment within football” for him.

Cavallo shared images of the proposal on social media, captured at the stadium where he has been playing since 2021. He wrote, “I’m grateful to Adelaide United for facilitating this surprise. Your unwavering support has been immensely meaningful to me. You’ve cultivated a supportive environment within football, one that I never imagined could be achievable, and you’ve encouraged me to live authentically every day of my life. It felt appropriate to mark this special moment on the field, where it all began,” as reported by BBC Sport.
